Frapperie offers custom hand-stamped solid copper & brass signs and nameplates made with admiration for the beauty and individuality of handcrafted goods. Our plaques are sealed with wax rather than lacquer allowing soft layers of patina to accumulate as the years go by, providing protection, character and a sense of history.

All work is done in-house following artisanal methodology. This slower manual production process yields a product that is unique and timeless while never sacrificing quality or style.

Brass & copper are perfect for indoor and outdoor use due to their extreme durability and resilience. Both metals are able to withstand outdoor elements with little maintenance.

Fabrication Process

Hand-stamping

The verb “frapper” in French means to hit or strike. Frapperie‘s brass and copper plaques are stamped one character at a time with a metal punch and a good strong tap of the hammer. The subtle differences in spacing and depth typical of this method add enormous character and charm. No two plaques are ever exactly the same!

Rather than using pre-made factory plates, Frapperie cuts each plaque by hand allowing for a variety of sizes and shapes. Don’t hesitate to contact us in order to request something made-to-measure.

Finishing

For the finish, each sign and nameplate is lightly hand sanded then treated with an oxidizing agent to darken the lettering and start the patina process, evoking a timeless vintage appearance.
Note that a coat of lacquer is never applied so that the metal can continue to take on a warm patina if desired or can be quickly hand-polished if needed to maintain its luster.

Frapperie plaques are made by Karen Rudd and Raoul Gatepin in their Neuville-sur-Saône workshop, located minutes from the lovely city of Lyon, France.
